Introduction to American Sign Language In-Person

In this 6-week series, you'll learn the essentials of ASL communication, covering everything from the alphabet and numbers to colors, questions, and food signs. No prior experience is necessary — just come ready to learn and have fun!

What You'll Learn:

  1. ABCs and Numbers: Get started with the ASL alphabet and numbers to build a strong foundation for signing.

  2. Colors: Discover how to sign a variety of colors, adding vibrancy to your conversations.

  3. Questioning Skills: Learn how to ask questions in ASL, making communication smoother and more engaging.

  4. Food Signs: Explore signs for different types of food, making it easier to talk about meals and preferences.

  5. Grammar Basics: Master the basic grammatical rules of ASL, including sentence structure and facial expressions.

 
About the Presenter: Matthew James Cochran started his journey with American Sign Language in 2012. He began by teaching himself ASL and during college he took his first ASL class. Throughout college, he continued to teach himself the language and after transferring to Slippery Rock University, joined their deaf club on campus. In May 2022 Matthew got hired as a Deaf Advocate for the Community Counseling Center for Western Pennsylvania. 2024 marks Matthew’s 12th year using ASL and he continues his understanding of Deaf culture and American Sign Language!
